Why Learn Italian in Kolkata in 2026?

Let's start with the practical case, then get to the cultural one.

Italy has some of the world's best universities — and they're remarkably affordable. Public universities charge €900–€4,000 per year in tuition, income-based. With a DSU scholarship (Italy's regional need-based grant), that can drop to zero — with free accommodation and meals thrown in. In 2026, Italy has over 959 English-taught programmes at Master's level alone. And a VFS Italy visa centre operates right here in Kolkata.

But the career angle goes beyond study. Italy is the global headquarters of fashion, luxury, design and food culture. Gucci, Prada, Versace, Armani, Bulgari, Valentino, Fiat, Ferrari, Barilla and Ferrero are all Italian companies. Knowing Italian gives you a real edge in the fashion, design, culinary, tourism, translation and luxury management sectors. Indian students who speak Italian get noticed in ways that English-only graduates simply don't.

And then there's the cultural reason. Italian is one of the closest-sounding languages to its Latin origins. It's the language of opera, Renaissance art, architectural history, Dante, Michelangelo and world-class food. Many Kolkata students tell us they started Italian purely because they loved the sound of it — and then discovered all the practical doors it opened.

Italian Course Levels at LNS: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2

Italian follows the CEFR framework — the same A1-to-C2 scale as German, French and Spanish. At LNS, we teach all six levels with a placement check before enrolment.

A1 & A2 (Beginner)

Italian A1 is one of the most enjoyable beginner levels in any European language. Pronunciation is completely phonetic — every letter sounds the same every time. Words like piano, opera, pizza, pasta, scenario, studio, soprano — you already know Italian words without realising it. We cover the alphabet (same as English), pronunciation rules, present tense, greetings and everyday situations. A2 builds past tenses, daily routines and short written texts. CILS A1 and A2 certify these levels.

We've found that most students are surprised by how fast they progress in the first two months. The phonetics alone build confidence quickly.

B1 & B2 (Intermediate)

B1 is where Italian becomes professionally and academically useful. You can hold real conversations, express opinions and communicate in most work and daily situations. CILS B1 also enables the Italian citizenship application process for those with Italian heritage. B2 is the study threshold — most Italian-taught university programmes require at least B2 for admission. If you're planning to study in Italy and want the full Italian experience (not just English-taught programmes), B2 is your target.

C1 & C2 (Advanced)

C1 and C2 are for those pursuing translation, academic research, senior roles at Italian companies or full cultural and linguistic immersion. We offer these levels at LNS for motivated students who commit to the long-haul journey. In our experience, students who reach C1 do so because Italian became a genuine passion, not just a career tool.

CILS, CELI & PLIDA — Which Italian Certificate?

Three main Italian proficiency certificates exist. Each has its own strengths. Here's the clear breakdown:

CILS — Certificazione di Italiano come Lingua Straniera

  • Issued by Università per Stranieri di Siena
  • The most internationally recognised Italian certificate
  • Levels: A1 to C2
  • Required for Italian citizenship (B1 level)
  • Accepted by most Italian universities and employers
  • Results: several months after the exam (paper-based)

CELI — Certificati di Conoscenza della Lingua Italiana

  • Issued by Università per Stranieri di Perugia
  • Also widely recognised for study, work and residence in Italy
  • Levels: A1 to C2
  • A strong alternative to CILS with similar recognition

PLIDA — Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri

  • Issued by Società Dante Alighieri
  • Official recognition; more common for cultural and heritage learners
  • Levels: A1 to C2
Certificate Issued by Best for Validity
CILS Università per Stranieri di Siena Study, citizenship, international recognition Permanent
CELI Università per Stranieri di Perugia Study, work, residence in Italy Permanent
PLIDA Dante Alighieri Society Cultural, heritage, general proficiency Permanent

All three are permanent — they don't expire.

Which should you take? Choose CILS for maximum international recognition and citizenship applications. CELI is an equally strong option for study and work in Italy. PLIDA suits heritage learners and those following the Dante Alighieri network.

LNS prepares you for whichever exam matches your goal. The actual exam is taken independently at the accredited centre. We don't administer Italian exams — at the end of our course, we conduct our own internal exam and issue an LNS Academy course completion certificate. The CILS/CELI/PLIDA certificate is a separate, independent exam you sit at the official centre.

Study in Italy from Kolkata

This section covers what almost no Italian course in Kolkata explains properly. So let's go through it in detail.

Why Italy is genuinely affordable for Indian students

Italian public universities charge €900–€4,000 per year. That's already well below the UK (£20,000+), the US ($40,000+) or Australia (AUD $35,000+). But the DSU scholarship makes it even better.

DSU (Diritto allo Studio Universitario) is Italy's regional, need-based scholarship. It covers:

  • 100% tuition waiver
  • Free or subsidised accommodation
  • Free canteen meals
  • Annual cash allowance of up to €7,200

Eligibility is income-based, not nationality-based. Indian students from middle-class families often qualify because Indian household income levels typically fall below Italy's DSU threshold (around €23,000–€27,000/year family income). In addition, merit-based scholarships are available from specific universities — the University of Bologna's Unibo Action 2 covers full tuition plus €11,000 annual stipend; Bocconi awards up to €13,000/year; Politecnico di Milano offers waivers up to €10,000/year.

And there's the MAECI scholarship (Italian government, Ministry of Foreign Affairs) — €900/month for 6–9 months, for students under 28 (Master's) or 30 (PhD). Applications for the 2026–27 cycle opened around May 2026.

The pre-enrolment process (Universitaly)

Every Indian student applying to an Italian university must complete pre-enrolment via the Universitaly portal — a mandatory government step. This typically happens between April and June for the autumn intake. After Universitaly approval, you proceed with your university application, then the visa.

Other important steps:

  • CIMEA / Declaration of Value (DOV): Credential evaluation of your Indian degree; costs approximately €150–€250 and takes time. Most universities now mandate CIMEA for enrollment.
  • HRD attestation + MEA Apostille: Required for your academic documents. This chain routinely takes 6–8 weeks — don't underestimate this. Students who start in July frequently miss the August visa appointment window.
  • Bank balance proof: At least €6,079 (~₹6.3 lakhs) in your account at the time of the visa application, even if you're applying for a scholarship.
  • VFS Italy centre in Kolkata: India's VFS Global network has a Kolkata centre for Italian visa applications — convenient for West Bengal students.

What Italian level do you need?

  • English-taught Master's programmes: Italian not required for admission. B2 English (IELTS/TOEFL) is sufficient. However, Italian B1–B2 helps enormously for daily life, part-time work and staying on post-study.
  • Italian-taught undergraduate programmes: Generally B2 Italian required (CILS B2 or equivalent).
  • Italian nationality applications: Minimum CILS B1.

LNS offers a focused study-in-Italy track — we map your timeline against the visa and pre-enrolment calendar and build your Italian level accordingly. Read our study in Italy from India guide for the full step-by-step process.

Italian Course Fees in Kolkata

Careers with Italian

Italian for fashion, design and culinary careers
Italian for careers — fashion, design, culinary & luxury

Italian opens very specific, high-value career doors. Here are the real ones:

Fashion & luxury design: Milan is the world's fashion capital. Gucci, Prada, Versace, Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Bulgari are all Italian. Italian proficiency gives you direct access to internships, jobs and communications in this industry. Indian fashion graduates increasingly target Italian design schools like Politecnico di Milano, IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) and Domus Academy — all of which value or require Italian.

Culinary arts: ALMA — The International School of Italian Cuisine in Parma — is the world's most prestigious culinary academy. Italian proficiency is essential if you're serious about professional cooking and Italian gastronomy. The farm-to-table, regional cuisine and gelato sectors employ Italian-speaking professionals globally.

Tourism & hospitality: Italy is consistently one of the world's top 5 most-visited countries. Hotels, airlines and travel agencies value Italian-speaking staff. Moreover, Indian tour companies running Italy packages increasingly need Italian-speaking local experts.

Italian companies in India: Stellantis/Fiat, Ferrero, Barilla, ENI, Benetton and Luxottica (owners of Ray-Ban) all have Indian operations. Italian proficiency in their recruitment processes matters.

Translation & interpretation: Italian-to-English and English-to-Italian translation is well-paying and lower-competition than French or German. Legal, fashion and culinary translation are particularly in demand.

Also worth noting: Italian has significant overlap with both French and Spanish grammatically. A B1 Italian learner picks up French language classes in Kolkata or Spanish language course in Kolkata noticeably faster. If you're building a Romance-language portfolio, Italian is an excellent addition.

How Long Does It Take to Learn Italian?

Italian is genuinely one of the easier European languages for English speakers. The alphabet is the same, spelling is phonetic (unlike French or English) and around 30% of Italian words have clear English or Latin origins.

Here's a realistic timeline:

  • A1: 6–8 weeks at 3–4 classes per week
  • B1: 7–9 months from scratch
  • B2 (Italian-taught university threshold): 10–12 months from zero

We've found that students who immerse — watch Italian films on Netflix, listen to Italian music, follow Italian food channels on YouTube — progress meaningfully faster than those who rely on class time alone. Italian also rewards early speaking. Unlike German or Japanese, the rhythm and sounds feel natural early, and that confidence builds momentum.

Why Choose LNS for Italian in Kolkata?

The Italian Cultural Institute (Ballygunge) is excellent — it's the official centre, with native Italian teachers and the only authorised CILS/CELI exam centre in the Kolkata area. But it operates on a fixed semester schedule with limited flexibility. And the fees reflect that premium.

LNS offers the same CEFR A1–C2 standard at lower fees, with:

  • Flexible weekday, weekend, evening and online batches
  • Small groups where each student gets personal attention
  • A study-in-Italy preparation track with exam timeline mapping
  • Qualified trainers with strong academic credentials from well-known colleges
  • ISO 9001:2015 certification — see our ISO certification

Since you sit the actual CILS or CELI exam independently at the Italian Cultural Institute or IICCI anyway, the quality of preparation is what determines your result. That's what we focus on.

Student Results & Reviews

"I joined LNS for Italian to prepare for a Master's application at an Italian design school. The CILS B2 preparation was rigorous — essay structures, listening comprehension, the oral exam format. I cleared CILS B2 and got admission to IED Turin. The study-in-Italy guidance on Universitaly and the document timeline was genuinely valuable."

— Ananya Das, Kolkata (design student, Italy)

"I was a complete beginner — knew nothing about Italian. By the end of A2, I could have a real conversation. The pronunciation teaching is excellent, and my trainer was patient with the grammar. Now midway through B1."

— Debashis Chatterjee, New Town (Italian for travel and culture)

"Weekend batches are the only way I could manage alongside my job. Two sessions per week, dedicated practice at home, and A1 done in two months. Very organised structure compared to the other places I checked."

— Ritu Agarwal, Salt Lake (Italian for professional development)
