Not always. It suits some learners, especially those who want an exam at the same centre. Private institutes can suit others better. Judge on class hours, teachers and fit.
French Classes in Kolkata: Official Centre, College or Private Institute?

An official cultural centre, a college certificate and a private institute are three different things. Each fits a different learner. This page helps you pick without guessing.
We are a private institute, so keep our bias in mind. We still think you should choose on facts, not on ads. Use the questions below with every place you visit, including us.
We have not named any institute or quoted any competitor fee. You can fill those in yourself when you call around.
Table of Contents
What kinds of French-teaching places are there in Kolkata?
- The official French cultural centre. Run with the French government’s network. Often also an exam centre.
- Colleges and universities. Certificate or diploma courses inside a college.
- Private institutes. Language schools like LNS, and individual tutors.
Each is a legitimate route. They differ in cost, hours, flexibility and goal.
How do they compare?
| Question | Official centre | College certificate | Private institute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fee level | Usually the highest | Often lower | Varies widely |
| Class hours per level | Usually the most | Fixed by the college | Varies. Always ask |
| Timings | Set batches | Fixed timetable | Often more flexible |
| Exam centre | Often yes | No | Usually no. Ask |
| Batch size | Ask | Ask | Ask. Smaller is better for speaking |
| Certificate | Their own | College’s own | Institute’s own |
These are general patterns, not facts about any one place. Check each one yourself.
When is the official centre the right choice?
- You want to sit an exam at the same place you studied.
- Your budget is comfortable and your timing fits their batches.
- You want the longest guided hours per level.
When is a college certificate the right choice?
- You want a certificate tied to a known institution.
- Your budget is tight and the timetable suits you.
When is a private institute the right choice?
- You need flexible timings or an online option.
- You want small batches and more speaking time.
- You want a specific goal, like TEF Canada and TCF Canada preparation or DELF B2.
The catch: quality varies. A private institute can be excellent or poor, and the name tells you little. That is why the next section matters.
What should I ask every institute, including us?
- How many class hours does one level have?
- What is the batch size?
- Who teaches, and how long have they taught French?
- How much do I speak in a normal class?
- Is writing marked and returned?
- What is included in the fee: books, mock papers, a certificate?
- Can I attend a demo class before paying?
- Do you register me for an external exam, or only prepare me?
If an institute will not answer plainly, that is your answer.
What does LNS do?
We are a private institute at 108, Majumder Para, 1 No Airport Gate. We teach French A1 to C2, in classroom and online, and offer a free demo class. At the end of each level we hold our own exam and give our own certificate. We do not conduct or register students for external exams like DELF or TEF Canada. We prepare you for them.
Our current fee for each level is on the course fees page. If you are comparing, ask the same eight questions everywhere.
What mistakes do people make when choosing?
- Choosing by fee alone
- Choosing by name alone
- Not asking about class hours
- Skipping the demo class
- Joining a level that is too high or too low
Read what to compare before choosing a French course for more on this.
How do I judge a teacher in a demo class?
A demo class is your best test. Watch for these:
- Do students speak, or does the teacher talk the whole time?
- Are mistakes corrected kindly and on the spot?
- Does the teacher explain in simple words, or hide behind jargon?
- Is there a clear plan for the level, or does the class wander?
- Would you want to come back next week?
Do not judge on the room or the brochure. Judge on the hour you sat in.
Is the cheaper fee really cheaper? How do I compare?
Compare the fee per class hour, not the fee alone. The sum is easy: divide the fee for a level by the number of class hours in that level.
Example, only to show the sum. If one place charges a certain fee for 120 hours and another charges a lower fee for 60 hours, the lower fee can cost more per hour. Do the sum with the real numbers you are quoted.
Then add what is not in the fee: books, mock papers, exam registration, travel. A slightly higher fee that includes everything can cost less in the end.
Which route suits which goal?
| Your goal | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Travel or a hobby | Flexible timings, a friendly batch, a lower fee |
| School French | A trainer who knows the school syllabus, and regular writing practice |
| Study in France | Hours up to B2, writing correction, mock papers for the exam you need |
| Canada PR | A plan to reach B2 and practice in the style of TEF Canada or TCF Canada. See that page |
| A job with a French company | Speaking time and workplace French at B1 and above |
Match the place to the goal, not to the brand name.
What red flags should I watch for?
- A guaranteed score or guaranteed visa. Nobody can promise it.
- No class hours stated. You cannot compare what you cannot see.
- No demo class. A good institute is not afraid of one.
- “Pay today or lose the seat.” Real batches can wait a day.
- A certificate described as if it were an official diploma. A certificate from an institute is that institute’s certificate. It is not DELF.
- Vague answers about who teaches.
Should I pick online or classroom?
Both can work. Classroom is easier if you get distracted at home. Online is easier if travel eats your day. Ask whether online classes are live with speaking practice, or only recorded videos. For French, live speaking matters most.
If you live near Dum Dum, Nagerbazar, Baguiati or Lake Town, a classroom batch at our Airport Gate centre is practical. Online covers the rest of Kolkata and beyond.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Anyone can register for an exam directly. Where you studied is your choice.
They are recognised as that college’s certificate. They are not an external diploma like DELF. Check what your goal needs.
It varies by institute. Ask, and compare the hours to the fee, not just the fee.
Yes. Take a placement check at the new one so you start at the right level.
Not necessarily. Ask about teachers and speaking time, not the brand.
It can be, with live speaking. Recorded-only courses are weaker for speaking.
